the Piccola Orchestra '900

founded in 1998

Born in 1998, the Piccola Orchestra '900 is now at its ninth year of performing activity and still has the same enthusiasm as in the beginning. Its artistic orientation is totally involved in the re-evaluation of compositions of the 20th century, wich is quite unique in Italy. As a matter a fact we had to enlarge our research to better understand the causes that brought to this fracture with the past.

We also believe that commissioning a Premiere at every concert is a consistent consequence of our orientation: to follow and live on our own experience contemporary music production brought us in the best conditions to insert in our own repertoire compositions that are rarely or never performed.

For its inauguration, the Piccola Orchestra '900 performed the Concerto Grosso in F major by G.F Ghedini, wich is rarely performed in the hole World.

We also performed the Sinfonietta by B. Britten, Saint Paul's Suite by G. Holst and the Etudes for string Orchestra by F. Martin in a live concert for the state radio program "Radio3 Suite".

During the past years, thanks also to Cantiere Musica Festival and Musica e Arte Composition Contest, the Piccola Orchestra '900 became one of the most important orchestras of Italy.

Having studied under A.Cusatelli he obtained his diploma in Composition and a degree in Italian Literature from Rome’s La Sapienza University with M. Bortolotto.  His thesis topic was the historical aspects of vocal techniques of the 19th century.
He then studied Orchestral Conducting at The Juilliard School of  New York.

From 1991 to 1994 he conducted the Chorus of U.P.T.E.R. 
In 1998 he founded the Piccola Orchestra ‘900 in collaboration with Musica e Arte.  This intense conducting activity has developed him professionally and enabled him to mature a vast repertoire of opera, ballet  and chamber music.

In 2001 he was a guest conductor at the Cantiere Internazionale D’arte di Montepulciano for the Royal Nothern College of Music of Manchester and performed the Premier of Inni Omerici by  Francesco  Antonioni.

He has been the Artistic Director of many international music festivals and also for the music festival Cantiere Musica since its inception in 2003.  That same year,  he conducted the Piccola Orchestra ‘900  in a live concert on the Italian state radio program Radio 3 Suite.

"Messa per la notte di natale 2004" by Corsi, Bernardini, Gabrieli, Ghigo, Scardino in 2004
"Cafè 900" by G. Bernardini in 2004
"The Man-of-War-Hawk" by D. Corsi in 2005
"I Started Early-Took my Dog" by G. Bernardini in 2005;
"Et ecce audio vocem" by G. Bernardini in 2006;
"Due Madri" by M. Gabrieli in 2007.

In 2007, for the Anguillara Summer Festival, has conducted "Don Giovanni", "Il Barbiere di Siviglia", and "Don Pasquale". In 2008 "La Traviata", and in 2009 "Rigoletto".

Artistic Director for Musica e Arte Composition Contest and Cantiere Musica.

Open AUDITIONS

To enhance the organic of the Piccola Orchestra '900 auditions are open for citiziens resident in Italy with a minimum age of 18 and a maximum age of 30.

Auditions are only for:

• Winds: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet
• Strings: Violin (I and II), Viola, Cello, Double Bass

The Audition repertoire is:

• A representative piece from the soloist repertoire of the 20th Century
• An Orchestral piece from the 20th Century Piccola Orchestra '900’s repertoire
• A published contemporary piece (it is highly recommended that you bring its full score)

Auditions will take place only at Musica e Arte Association in Rome and will be held by the commission responsable of Piccola Orchestra ‘900:
